Bhanu Athaiya handed away on Thursday morning at the age of 91. She is the first Indian to win an Oscar. She gained the Best Costume Design for the 1982 movie Gandhi directed by Richard Attenborough.
Richard Attenborough began making Gandhi in 1980 after repeatedly visiting India for 17 years. He selected Bhanu Athaiya as the Costume designer for the movie by an interview course of. Athaiya was the solely Indian division head in the workforce. Rest of the division heads hailed from England. While Athaiya dealt with all the Indian costumes for the movie for each character large or small, John Mollo who shared the Oscar along with her did the costumes for the British characters.
Gandhi obtained many nominations at the BAFTA and for the Oscars. In her memoir, Bhanu Athaiya recalled the moment she went to the Oscar and gained. She stated that on her method to the Oscar, her journey companion, the script author of Gandhi advised her, “I have a hunch that you will get the award and it will be a well-deserved one.”
“Inside the auditorium, I used to be seated together with the different 4 nominees in my class for the movies La Traviata, Victor / Victoria, Sophie’s Choice and Tron. All the 4 nominees stated that they stood an opportunity and that the Oscar could be mine. When I requested them why they felt this fashion, they stated it was as a result of my canvas was so large, “she wrote in her memoir.
In her speech after successful the award, Athaiya stated, “This is simply too good to be true. Thank you Sir Richard Attenborough for focusing world consideration on India. Thank you Academy.” “As I began to stroll down the stage, I noticed Richard blowing kisses to me from the entrance row !, “she wrote in her memoir titled The Art of Costume Design.
